We’d left Scotland at a sad time, but with optimism in our steps. We had nothing, so if our plans failed, we’d simply come back with nothing. We’d be no worse off than when we left. It was worth the risk.

Now, just a few months later, it was beginning to feel as though the risk wasn’t going to pay out and our dream of buying a property for an artist residency in France might be slipping away.
